Society is moving towards organic, Should I?
Demand
for organic products is increasing at a double-digit rate. This is a
result of consumers being aware of healthful items. In India alone,
the organic food market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of over 25%
during 2016-2021. Even the government seems to be making efforts to
popularize the adoption of organic food items. But one might argue
that GMOs are not essentially bad, and they are somewhat right in
their argument. But when you choose to go Organic, you are not just
opting for a healthy life for yourself, but also for the planet.
Better
for you and the planet
Organic
foods mostly have higher nutritional value than the conventional
food. The reason is that in the absence of pesticides and
fertilizers, plants boost their production of the phytochemicals or
bioactive extracts (vitamins and antioxidants) that strengthen their
resistance to bugs and weeds. While there are levels in conventional
food that are safe for most of us, there are studies that have linked
pesticides in our food to everything from headaches to cancer to
birth defects.
Organic products
farming reduces the use of chemicals significantly, which in turn
does not pollute the underground water. This creates richer soil that
aids plant growth while reducing erosion, according to the Organic
Trade Association. When organically produced items are used to
manufacture products, such as skin care, those products are
essentially low on chemicals. Which makes these products
bio-degradable and they do not pollute our environment. Most of these
products are not even tested on animals.
The
products that are manufactured using the by-products of organically
or naturally grown food items are termed as organic and natural
products. The use of organically grown food items automatically
reduces the amount of chemical in a product because the chemicals
used in GMOs are not ending up in it.
It
goes without any question that the natural and organic products are
better over synthetic products any day. Synthetic products include
harmful chemicals such as preservatives, phthalates, petrochemicals,
synthetic perfumes, and artificial colouring. While, all natural skincare products have healthy and essential oils, organic and
biodegradable ingredients.
